Back to School Sourdough Kit

275.00

The store customer, who comes home with a package under his arm has learned nothing, except that a ten-dollar bill is a source of power in the market place. The man or woman who has converted material into needed products via tools and skills has matured in the process.

Helen Nearing, The Good Life: Helen and Scott Nearing's Sixty Years of Self-Sufficient Living

Fall is the perfect time to jump into sourdough baking and I’ve prepared a back to school kit to help you get started. Covering the basics this kit includes: a one-of-a-kind art object version of A Baker’s Year, a limited edition, handmade clay sourdough crock from Laura Keyes pottery, a hand carved wooden spoon to mix up your starter, one ounce of fresh, active Smoke Signals Sourdough Starter and a flour sack towel.

I had the idea to create these kits while watching my neighbor and friend, Laura Keyes, work her pottery wheel. I’ve enjoyed keeping my starting in simple, clear jars, but the texture of the clay and the sound the crock lid makes when it settles into place is so sweet and earthen I knew we needed to collaborate. Keyes made only five of these for our exclusive Back to School kits. The crocks can be used to store and maintain your sourdough starter or used to ferment other goods in small batches. Hand wash and dry. Not intended for use on a stove top or in an oven. Keyes’ sourdough crocks are sure to look at home on your countertop, quickly becoming a family heirloom.

As for the books, I needed to personalize them. Drawing inspiration for the microbial environment and the working of water and gluten, I came up with an abstract piece that interlocks each image on the book into a larger picture. Each book can also stand alone and is signed, dated and covered in a hand painted paper jacket. These rare copies are also hand stamped with regional leaves and embellished with personal photos and to-do lists from my time living here at the bakery. These versions are meant to be written in and lived with. Add your own lists, photos, memories and baking inspiration. It’s a living collage documenting the sourdough journey.

This also kit includes one ounce of our healthy, active, fresh, six-year-old sourdough starter! It’s all you need to get going on your baking journey. This starter is the root of all the bread I make here at Smoke Signals. As it is a living thing (a medium of tiny respirating and reproducing microscopic yeast and bacteria) it will need care within 24 hours of receiving this package. Directions for taking care of your starter and can be found in on our website under sourdough starter.

All kits will be sent out Monday, August 27th

Each kit includes a free Smoke Signals baking club patch and pencil

 Happy baking!
